GREAT BARRACUDA
Sphyraena barracuda

SIZE 6.6 ft (2 m)

RANGE Western and Eastern Atlantic Ocean

HABITAT Pelagic (open ocean) both brackish and marine environments

DIET Fishes, cephalopods and shrimps

Great barracuda in the size range of 1 ½ - 3 ft. have been known to congregate in large schools. A school of 200 was once observed hanging motionless over the wreck of the Hesperus in the waters off Bimini Island in the Bahamas. When they reach a size of 3 ft., barracuda become solitary. Once they reach this size, they become somewhat territorial, and they have been known to approach divers who enter their area. The barracuda is one of the most misunderstood fish of the sea. The barracuda are curious fish, and they are opportunistic feeders. Barracuda are considered to be game fish and are good to eat, but one must exercise extreme caution before consuming. This fish is one of the prime candidates for causing ciguatera (fish poisoning) in humans. One should avoid eating barracuda greater than 2 feet in length.
